UNIVERSAL COLUMN

uc-big.png

Universal columns are the most commonly used on steel structures being often referred to as I-section or H-section due to their section shape, the width is roughly

equal to their depth.

It is easy to work out what the total weight of a UC is by multiplying its total length in metres by its weight per metre.

Using the first measurement on the chart as an example;

• ‘152 UC 23’

• 152 mm = depth

• 152 mm = width

• 23 = weight per metre in kilograms.

For structural steel purposes, universal columns are most often used for;

• Columns

• Load bearing members when height is limited (which is quite often the case in residential projects).
